Blood Donors for Holmer Vets
Just like humans, occasionally dogs need blood transfusions to save their lives. For this we need to give them blood donated by other dogs. At Holmer, rather than using a dog blood bank, we have a list of dogs available for blood donation. In the event of a patient needing a blood transfusion, a donor from the list is then contacted to donate blood which is then given to the poorly patient immediately.
If you would like your dog to become a blood donor and help save lives, please read on to find out more!

Your dog must meet the following criteria in order to be considered as a blood donor:
- Over 27kg in weight
- Under 8 years old
- In good health, and up to date with vaccinations and worming
- Calm, quiet temperament
- NO history of travel overseas
- Must NOT have received a blood transfusion themselves.
In addition to the above criteria, we need our blood donors to belong to someone who is readily contactable day and night so that their dog can be available to donate blood in the event of an emergency
If you think your dog meets these requirements, and you are interested in your dog becoming a blood donor, please contact the surgery to book a free assessment appointment with Rachel Allen. She will discuss with you in more detail and assess your pet for suitability. If your pet is assessed as an appropriate donor, Rachel may also take a blood sample from your pet to check his/her blood type (again this is free of charge).
