Welcome To Holmer Veterinary Surgery
Introduction
Welcome to Holmer Surgery. We would like to give you an insight into the practice and how we pride ourselves on caring for you and your pets.
The surgery is maintained in accordance to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) at level 2. Therefore, we follow set rules on running the surgery to provide the best care possible for your animal. As an independent practice we pride ourselves in being able to provide a service 24/7 for registered pets. We are also a training practice supporting the nurses and vets of the future.
Appointments
The surgery is open Monday to Saturday with consultations by appointment only. We have a 24hr emergency phone line which, when called, which will put you through to the on-call vet or nurse out of hours. There is no additional charge to call the surgery out of hours line but normal network fees will apply. All emergency calls will automatically be diverted when calling 01432 272468. All emergencies are seen at the practice, if considered
necessary/appropriate by the attending vet house visits can be arrange.
Training
Holmer Surgery has both full and part time qualified nurses, as well as nurses going through training. All trainee nurses are registered with a recognised college who will help complete their training.
Holmer also has vet students who come to us on their rotations. This enables them to see surgery and get hands on practice. Trainee nurses and vets are supervised at all time, only performing tasks appropriate to their level of training.
Office and Reception
The office and reception is run by a team of staff who are happy to help with any queries that you have with accounts, insurance claim forms etc., please feel free to ask.
Facilities
There are 3 vet consulting rooms and a multipurpose room used for imaging, nurse consults or as a quiet area for bereaved clients. The surgery, all 3 consult rooms and the client toilet facilities are wheelchair accessible.
The surgery has 3 operating areas. A cat operating room, prep room and hospitalisation area upstairs, 2 dog operating rooms and kennel rooms with a dog prep area downstairs. Each area has its own isolation unit for non-vaccinated/contagious animals. The dog ward has a selection of different sized kennels to accommodate different size dogs. Each ward has its own area to prepare food and medication.
We have 2 preparation areas to accommodate both operating rooms, we can also perform dentals in these areas. Our operating theatres are separated from the preparation areas by glass walls, this is to provide as much of a sterile environment as possible. The glass walls allow us to see what’s going on without lots of people being in the room.
Equipment
The surgery has all the necessary equipment to perform the different procedures it carries out. These include digital x-ray, ultrasound, ECG, up to date laboratory equipment and blood pressure monitoring.
Prescriptions
If your animal requires medication after a consultation with the vet, we are happy to provide you with that medication from our own pharmacy. Written prescriptions may be requested but will incur an additional charge, please discuss this with the case vet.
If your animal/s needs repeat medication then we ask that you phone us before 12pm in order for it to be ready for collection after 4pm Monday to Friday, 1pm Saturday. Requests taken after midday will be prepared the next working day. If your medication is a “special order”(not routinely stocked in the practice) please ensure that you have at least 5 days worth of medication, when placing your request, to allow plenty of time for us to place and receive the product.
We do not process repeat prescription requests on Sundays.
If your animals/s are having regular/daily medication then we ask for a 6/12 month check up to make sure it is still receiving the correct dosage, and is not showing any side effects. This is something we have to do by law. It also makes sure that you and your vet are able to optimise the treatment for your pet.
Repeat prescriptions requests are taken by phone only. 01432 272468.
Payments
Payment is requested at the time of consultation for any routine treatments, operations and medication. For non-routine treatments we will consider whether a payment plan is appropriate on a case-by-case basis. Clients with payment plans are expected to fulfil their agreement of regular payments and, in addition pay at the time of receipt of future consultations, treatments and ongoing/repeat medications. If at any point you have concerns about your payments we strongly encourage/advise you to speak to one of our accounts team as soon as possible. Clients failing to settle their bill or defaulting on payments of a payment plan, after due warning, will be referred to a debt collection agency and forfeit their right to continue their pets care at our practice, being advised to seek their pets healthcare needs elsewhere.

Updates are done by phone and if appropriate visits may be organised for long term in-patients.
Over Night Care
Holmer Surgery is not a hospital.
Any patient/s that we have in will be assessed each evening by the on-call vet . Case vets will appraise the on-call vet and nurse of the specific condition and needs of their inpatient. The case vet will determine the need for late night check/s for their patient. The late-night checks are routinely performed by the on-call nurse who will call the on-call vet in if they have any concerns. Ongoing 24/7 overnight monitoring will be provided/offered where there is clinical need and charge accordingly.

Cremation services
At Holmer Vets we have a long-established relationship with Summerleaze Pet Cremation Services (PCS), a fully accredited cremation service based in Newport. Summerleaze are able to provide services for private or communal pet cremation as well as other keepsakes, when a beloved pet is lost. Regular transport from the practice to the crematorium is provided but owners can contact Summerleaze if they prefer to take their pet directly. Clients may choose from a selection of vessel types for the return of their individually cremated pets ashes, alternatively they may make a direct request with Summerleaze to have their pets ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance. Clients are welcome to arrange to use an alternative provider for their pets cremation if preferred.
Practice environmental sustainability
At Holmer Vets we are committed to minimising our impact on the environment. We are striving to continuously improve our approach and systems to ensure we protect the environment whilst maintaining the highest clinical standards. The practice has a recycling and waste reduction plan aiming to maximise use of sustainable eco-friendly supplies of consumables with maximal opportunities for recycling including paper/cardboard, hard and soft plastics, used batteries, to minimise disposal of waste via landfill or incineration. Biodegradable produce is disposed of in a practice composter. Electrical equipment
(dishwasher, washing machine, autoclave) are run on a full load to optimise efficiency. Natural line drying is used for the drying of washing. LED lights are used to optimise energy efficiency with many areas controlled by motion sensors, elsewhere staff are encouraged to switch off lights when an area is not in use. Paperless vaccination reminders are sent out to clients via text and in 2025 we hope to have the majority of our clients registered for paperless statements. Our agenda for future improvements to our sustainability include installing a more efficient heating system. In our longer term plan we will look towards generating our own green energy with the options of installing solar panels and/or an air source heat pump under consideration.
